Bloos versus the audition

A soft, playful melody fills the air in the Sondagskloof. Bloos walks around with a piece of sheet music, reading it as she hums.

She is interrupted by someone clearing a throat behind her. Bloos swings around – surprised to see Skoonma and Kaalvoet Meisie nearby. “Shucks, how long have you been watching me?” she asks, with a giggle.

“What?” asks Skoonma. “No, no, I’m just clearing my throat. Allergies, you know.”

Kaalvoet Meisie offers a chuckle: “I heard you humming, Bloos. That was really unique. We should sing together sometime!”

“Actually,” Bloos says with a hopeful grin, “there’s an audition in Hermanus next week. A really cool band is looking for a new lead singer, and I’m rehearsing the songs!”

Much ooh-ing and aah-ing from Skoonma and Kaalvoet Meisie as they practically accost Bloos with advice. “Just be humble and easy-going,” says Skoonma. “People respect that, mos!”

“No!” Kaalvoet Meisie chimes in. “You have such a bubbly,  happy-go-lucky personality! Just gooi that, and they will fall in love with you.”

Bloos blushes. “But, I’m not looking for respect or love from them. I just want a chance to sing these lovely songs with the band, in front of a crowd. So I can touch people’s hearts, and spread the joy!”

Skoonma and Kaalvoet Meisie share a look, then both shrug. “The music industry isn’t all that nice … But you’ll see,” says Skoonma as she walks off.

Kaalvoet Meisie joins her: “Yoh, Skoonma, that was nogals harsh!”

Skoonma shakes her head. “It’s better if she learns it the hard way.”

The two of them walk off.

Bloos, having heard every word, picks the sheet music up again, with trembling hands. She studies the music, hums again – but now with uncertainty in her voice …
