History Hermanuspietersfontein

In the early 1800’s farmers in the Hemel-en-Aarde valley felt their children should rather be schooled in Dutch, forerunner of Afrikaans. Oftentimes they only remunerated farm teacher, Hermanus Pieters, in sheep, which he would graze at a spring under Milkwood trees near the sea. In l855, long after his passing, the village Hermanuspietersfontein was founded in his honour. In the early 1900’s the postmaster shortened the village name to Hermanus.

A century later we felt it fitting to revive and relive our village’s past by bringing back Hermanuspietersfontein in our cellar and wine brand. And to honour Hermanus Pieters and the passion of the people of 1855 we’ve committed all our wine names and labels will always only be in Afrikaans – the only cellar in South Africa to do so.
